Meredith Stapleton will perform two collaboratively choreographed duets with Harlee Trautman. “Geometry” is a stoic and sensitive spatial formula crafted specifically for the Iron Factory. It investigates misalignment through external shifts that manifest internal drama. “What did your father tell you?” is incredibly light hearted in comparison. With text pulled from the children’s story of Bambi, the duet follows one character thumping around in hiking boots and another struggling to walk in stilettos. Both pieces explore desires to connect through the very things that may disconnect, a dynamic prevalent in much of Meredith’s pursuit of beautiful awkwardness.

Gallery Hours at TSA Philly

Gallery Hours @ TSA Philly (319A North 11th Street #2H, Philadelphia PA 19107)
October 16th 2-6PM

Come visit Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philly on Sunday, October 16th for "Gallery Hours", choreographed by Meredith Stapleton, featuring Marisa Illingworth, Harlee Trautman, & Jennifer Yackel.

What if our bodily sense of center was relocated to our knees or mouth? How would our relationship to gravity and postural language change? "Gallery Hours" imagines landscapes in which the body explores alternative centers, each encountering a variation of strangeness. The performers double as gallery attendants shifting on and off duty, but never fully off. National Public Radio, to which the piece is scored, immerses the gallery in a sea of stories and events, reminding us that these four de-centered bodies are part of an interconnected world. Each hour will follow the same score on a different cast. The audience may filter in and out at their own pace. Here's our plan for each hour, if you want to pick and choose what most interests you.

Warm Up (10-15min)
Long Section (about 35 minutes)
Duo/Trio (5-10 min)
Break (5-10min)

Check out the preperation for "Gallery Hours" here:
http://abodyhasnocenter.com/events/gallery-hours

*The perfromance will take place during the final exhibiiton of
A BODY HAS NO CENTER, "Frame/ Unframed".

Curator Ricky Yanas proposes A Body Has No Center as an “incomplete object” opening up the idea of the gallery exhibition as a site for “emergent forms.” With a dynamic range of participants, a set of rotating mini-exhibitions in the Tiger Strikes Asteroid gallery and other venues, and a multitude of performances and events spread throughout the Philadelphia area, the project will be defined by a series of non-harmonious moments, events and atmospheres rather than a singular theme, specific space, or particular kind of work. Decentralizing the focus of the exhibition makes possible a space of play and informality where moments and relationships are privileged over constant and concrete forms, echoing the joyous instability of any singular view of what we are.

We're all a little bit stubborn

Call it dogged. Or determined. Passionate and tenacious. Megan Flynn's company of fully-embodied, physically articulate dancers present solos, duets and small group works that engage the audience in an age-old debate of nature versus nurture: Aren’t we all a little bit stubborn sometimes?

Conwell Dance Theater
1801 N. Broad St, Philadelphia, PA
Saturday, September 24th 7:30pm
Sunday, Septebmer 25th 3:00pm

MFDC, comprised of seasoned artists from Philly and NYC, strives to present contemporary dance works exploring authenticity and celebrating vulnerability. Following the premiere of “Dances with Socks” in the 2015 Philly Fringe, critics recognized Flynn for her “disciplined craftwomanship” and “expansive, full-bodied dancing” (The Dance Journal, 2015), and MFDC performances as “a marley full of magnificent dancing, reminding us that art strengthens community” (The Dance Journal, 2016). In this work, Flynn and her “stellar group of collaborators” (Broad Street Review, 2015) examine stubbornness and how it shapes individuals and relationships. The show will feature original music by Alan Terricciano.

Trailer

The One, The Other One, & The Many by Philadelphia-based choreographer Katherine Kiefer Stark examines the age-old story of a hero’s journey in a highly physical, cinematic style modern dance work.

The One, The Other One, & The Many explores leadership, heroism, and power in pop-culture, using cinematic structures and techniques to create quickly shifting perspectives. Drawing from research into heroic and emergent leader narrative films and personal experiences, the work presents a physical narrative of a hero’s journey with ten dancers whose roles vary from being members of a group to serving as invisible threads assisting the lead character.

Development of this work began in 2015 with support from the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. It is the first work of a trilogy.

The Importance of Normal

The Naked Stark, is being presented in the Capital Fringe this July 9-17!  PDF Flyer attached.

The Importance of Normal

This haunting dance narrative follows the life of a girl-woman. She struggles to separate self and sanity in a complex of ever-shifting floors and walls. Defying or ignoring gravity, she confronts the undeniable presence of normal.

The work features a fabulous multi-disciplinary group of artists.
Concept and direction by Katherine Kiefer Stark
Dance performance by Beau Hancock, Meredith Stapleton, Katherine Kiefer Stark, and Grace Stern
Original sound score by Paul Stern, performed live by Konnie Stark on piano and Ajibola Rivers on cello
And lighting design by Leigh Mumford

The Importance of Normal premiered in Philadelphia's First Person Arts Festival in 2013.

"I found the dance a most intriguing way to express the arc of a life." -- Audience member

"It is the dance’s richest metaphor: of a divided self, of the barriers that prevent us from feeling and communicating, and, as the unstable plywood continually falls between the two, the fragility of coping with life and relating to others. In its laconic poetry this brief segment becomes a distillation of the entire work." -- Jonathan Stein, thINKing DANCE

SOLOnely Together

I'm honored and all the best kinds of nervous to present a solo in this unique, heartfelt show produced by Caroline O'Brien..

On January 15th 2016 at 7:30pm, Headlong studios in South Philadelphia will be the meeting grounds for project SOLOnely Together. A cast of once homeless and non-homeless will intimately share their emotional spectrum of struggles with loneliness and moments of happiness; for a similarly blended audience of once homeless and non-homeless alike. What is loneliness to you? What does it look like? What does it feel like? Sound like? This is an opportunity to use art as a platform for connecting two worlds that normally would not exist in such an intimate setting. Through a variety of performances, two uncommon yet similar experiences unite; guiding the audience in exploration and appreciation of the many commonalities we share as people. Admittance to show is optionally donation based, with further opportunities to bestow canned food and goods to the participating organization, TASK. TASK (Trenton Area Soup Kitchen) feeds those who are hungry in the Trenton area and offers programs to encourage self-sufficiency and improve the quality of life of its patrons. Through art, and with your presence,we can end this fight of loneliness- together.
